Spaced Repetition Explained: Why Timing Beats Repetition

Reviewing a word ten times in one evening works worse than five reviews spread over a month. The forgetting curve, the spacing effect, and how to use them with nothing more than a YouTube playlist.

In 1885 Hermann Ebbinghaus memorised lists of nonsense syllables, waited, and tested himself. The result was the first forgetting curve: memory drops steeply in the first hours and days, then flattens. Most of what we learn in one sitting is gone within a week, unless something interrupts the curve.

What interrupts it is a review at the right moment. That single observation grew into the most reliably demonstrated principle in learning research, the spacing effect, and into the algorithms behind every serious flashcard app.

The spacing effect

Two learners study the same twenty words for the same total time. One does it all in one evening (massed practice). The other spreads the same minutes over five short sessions across two weeks (spaced practice). Tested a month later, the second learner remembers markedly more. This is not a small effect and it is not controversial: a meta-analysis of 254 studies (Cepeda et al., 2006) found spaced practice beat massed practice in almost every one of them.

The reason is counter-intuitive. A review is most useful when it is slightly difficult, when you have started to forget and have to reconstruct the memory. Reviewing something you still remember perfectly feels productive and does almost nothing. Reviewing it just before it slips away strengthens it and, crucially, slows the next forgetting curve, so the following review can wait longer.

How long should the gap be?

Longer than instinct says. Cepeda and colleagues (2008) found that the ideal gap between reviews depends on how long you want to remember: for a test in a week, review after about a day; for a test in a year, spread reviews weeks apart. As a rough rule the best gap is 10–20% of the time you want the memory to last.

For vocabulary you want for life, that means the schedule expands: a day, then three days, a week, two weeks, a month, three months. Each successful recall earns a longer gap. Each failure resets it.

From Leitner boxes to algorithms

Sebastian Leitner turned this into a paper system in 1972: cards you know move to a box reviewed less often; cards you miss move back to the daily box. In 1987 Piotr Woźniak wrote the first computer algorithm, SM-2, which assigns every card its own interval based on how easily you recalled it. Anki, SuperMemo and most modern apps descend from it. The mechanism is the same everywhere: test yourself, grade the answer, let the software set the next date.

Spacing without an app

You do not need software to benefit. Three habits capture most of the effect:

  1. Never learn a word once. Meet it, then meet it again tomorrow, then next week. The first re-encounter is the most valuable review you will ever do.
  2. Test before you look. When a word comes up, try to say it before you see or hear the answer. A guess, even a wrong one, makes the correction stick.
  3. Let the gaps grow. If a word is easy, do not review it tomorrow; review it next week. Save the daily attention for words that are still slipping.

With YouTube this is easy to arrange. VisualMem publishes one word per Short, in CEFR order, and a longer "50 Words in 10 Minutes" video for each level. A workable spaced routine looks like this:

  • Daily: watch the day's new Shorts on your channel and say each word before it is pronounced.
  • Every few days: replay the 50-word video for your level. Because the four images appear before the word, every slot is a self-test.
  • Weekly and monthly: go back to the previous parts. Words you now find easy are the sign that the spacing is working.

What is coming

Takeaway

Memory is not built by repetition but by timed repetition. Review a word when you are about to forget it, let the gaps grow after every success, and a vocabulary that used to evaporate in a week will still be there in a year.
